SEO – What is it?

What does SEO mean and what exactly is it? SEO can seem like a complex term to a lot of people and this means that they are not exactly sure what it is exactly.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and it is about optimising your website so that it ranks higher in search engine results – for example when people use a search engine like Google. In other words, when people search for something on Google related to your website and company, your website will have a higher placed position in Google’s search results page.

SEO is a discipline that is about competing with other websites in order to achieve a good ranking in Google’s search results page. If you want to have a high ranking in Google’s search results page and be seen before your competitors’ websites are seen, then it is extremely important that you understand what SEO is and work with the tools that relate to SEO.

SEO only has an impact on organic rankings in Google. These are the rankings that have not been paid for. If you use Google Ads, you can simply pay to get a top position in Google’s search results when a specific keyword is used. In other words, SEO is “free” since it does not require payment to a third party but solely depends on your efforts.

Why is SEO important?

Many of your customers and users search the web for information about you or your company using Google or some another search engine. It is important that you are there where your customers are. Many millions of people spend considerable amounts of time surfing the net.

SEO is now almost solely structured in relation to Google. This is because Google is the world’s largest search engine with 91% of the search market share. Studies show that 9/10 clicks in a Google search are made on the first search results page.

It is thus extremely important that you know what SEO is and put in serious effort in SEO if you want to achieve good results and be seen before your competitors are seen.

SEO is constantly changing because Google’s search algorithm constantly changes. Google indexes your website using a bot. This method is called crawling and it just means that Google scans your website. Google’s bot wants to be able to scan your website as easily as possible. You can work on this by implementing a series of technical initiatives and SEO Feedback’s reports can specifically guide you through these. Get an SEO report for your website here.

The four pillars of SEO

Google determines where your website should be ranked in its search results page using a method called crawling. This means that Google scans your website. Google uses a bot that crawls through your website and determines the quality of your website based on four elements. We have divided these elements into four parts, which we call the four pillars of SEO. Once you have seriously worked on all four pillars you will have already done enough to get a good ranking on Google.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO is about the technical tips and tricks that you can implement to improve your website’s user experience. In particular, it is about load times, responsiveness and about whether your website is secure and certified.

Technical implementation also makes it easier for Google’s bot to crawl your site – a big plus. Among other things, it is important that you have a sitemap of your website.

There are countless technical SEO initiatives and we recommend that you download SEO Feedback’s report, so you can gain an overview of which initiatives are necessary for you and your website.

Keywords

Keywords are about understanding your users and target group. By optimising your landing page in relation to the keywords that your users and customers use, you ensure that you get the right visitors to your website.

You can use Google Ads’ free tool for this. It is called the Google Ads Keyword Planner and you can use it to get ideas and data about keywords.

You can then optimise your landing page using specific keywords. But remember, you should avoid just repeating keywords in your content. This is known as keyword stuffing and Google punishes websites that do this. Instead, use them naturally and use synonyms and variations that make your content unique and relevant to users.

Content

Even though you work with SEO, your content must be written for your users and customers – not for search engines. Find out what your users really want to know or what their problems are. Create content on the basis of that knowledge; content that has value for your users and content that solves their problems.

In relation to SEO, you should be aware that your pages should contain a minimum of 300 words and ideally, more than 600 words, in order for Google to recognise them as valuable pages. Good SEO content cannot be written in five minutes!

You must also remember to use H1s, H2s, etc., in your headings. This tells Google that your content has a logical structure. Learn more tips for writing great SEO texts here.

Link building

Links

The final pillar in SEO is links. There are two kinds of links – links to your website and links from your website. Perhaps you have heard about link building, which is about internal and external links. They are important when search engines rank your website, as this means your website has valuable and relevant content.

Links to your website, i.e. websites that link to your website, are an extremely important factor in SEO. We propose that you create high-quality content. For example, a blog article that people share and this creates links to your website.

In addition, you also increase your SEO value if you link to other websites – ideally websites with many users and which already have a high ranking on Google. This shows Google that your claims are from trustworthy sources, which results in Google determining that your content is more valuable and is of a higher quality.
